Why did we choose the name Pigs Point BBQ? Here’s why:
A Taste of History: The Battle of Pig Point Where Smoke First Rose Over Suffolk
Back in the early days of the Civil War, before the smoke of barbecue filled the Suffolk skies, it was cannon smoke that marked the first clash in this part of Virginia. On June 5, 1861, the Battle of Pig Point unfolded just downriver from modern-day Suffolk. Union gunboats, including the USS Harriet Lane, opened fire on a small Confederate battery stationed at Pig Point—strategically located at the mouth of the Nansemond River.
Though the exchange was brief and relatively bloodless, it marked one of the earliest naval skirmishes in Virginia and hinted at the long, smoky road ahead.
Here at Pigs Point BBQ, we honor that fiery past with a different kind of battle—between bold flavors, slow-smoked meats, and tangy southern sauces. Just like at Pig Point, we believe smoke tells a story—only now, it ends with a full belly and a satisfied smile.
From smoke and fire then... to smoke and flavor now.
